What is the difference between strip cut and cross cut shredders?

Strip cut shredders shred particles into thin strips of paper like spaghetti. These strips range in thicknesses depending on the model from a 2mm to 6mm wide. Strip cut shredders require less cutting action from the machine than crosscut shredders. Because less cutting is required, strip cut paper shredders shred greater volumes of paper at a time than cross cut shredders. You can see from the pictures below the general difference between strip cut cutters and a cross cut cutters.

Cross cut shredders basically create diagonal pieces of paper. These crisscross particles vary in size depending on the model. From very tiny particles of 0.8mm (Class A high security) to 4mm (Level 3 security), generally the higher the security class the more expensive the shredder. Cross cut paper shredders generally shred less volume per pass due to the cross cutting action than that of strip cut. However crosscut shredders provide more security and the by-product is more compact meaning less frequent emptying of waste than that of a strip cut shredder.

Can I put through paper clips and staples?

The simple answer is; only on some models. If the shredder has hardened steel cutters and the motor capacity is strong then clips and staples will not pose an issue.

How often do I need to oil a shredder?

A good rule of thumb is oil every time that you empty your waste bin. Apply a figure 8 of shredder oil onto a sheet of A4 paper then feed through the shredder. Simple as that! If you keep the shredder well lubricated you will keep the shredder performing at its optimum level and extend its life significantly.

How long can I keep the shredder operating?

Good quality office shredders will generally perform continuously for approximately 30 minutes without needing to be cooled down. Very high capacity shredders can shred for longer periods but will also need to be cooled down throughout the shredding process.

Cheaply manufactured shredders will probably need to be cooled down every few minutes. It is well worth investing in a machine which will give at least half an hour’s continuous performance.

Why are metal gears so important?

Many cheaply manufactured machines cut down on production costs by using cheap compoentry. Metal gears are vastly superior in strength. Generally shredders which have metal gears tend to be supported by strong and efficient motors.
